Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Damper Repair: The Alpharetta Owner’s Guide
HeatShield damper repair in Alpharetta typically runs $240 – $520 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping the damper plate, the cable assembly, or the full frame. We stock HeatShield-compatible damper parts on our trucks, and most Alpharetta jobs are completed in a single visit. The way most homeowners discover the problem: they feel cold air spilling into the living room during the summer, or they notice the damper handle spinning freely without any resistance. That free-spinning handle is the giveaway. The cable has either snapped or slipped off the pulley inside the flue.
Kindling Chimney Alpharetta is an independent service provider. HeatShield is the brand on the part, not the crew in the truck. We work on their dampers every week.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
If your damper was installed with a HeatShield liner system, you almost certainly have one of two configurations. The most common in Alpharetta is the top-sealing model with the cable that runs down the flue to a bracket mounted on the firebox wall. The other is the pivot-frame damper that sits just above the firebox throat. Both use the same replacement plate assembly, but the cable length differs, and that’s where the mistakes happen on DIY jobs.
The model number is on a small metal tag riveted to the damper frame. Use your phone camera and zoom in – it usually reads HS-DMP followed by three digits. If the tag is gone, we measure the flue opening and match from there. A Chimney 13×13 flue tile takes a different plate than a round 8-inch liner. We stock genuine HeatShield damper plates and heavy-duty aftermarket cable assemblies that use braided stainless core. For Alpharetta’s humidity swings, we almost always recommend the stainless cable over the original galvanized version. The galvanized cables in this climate tend to corrode at the pulley contact point within five to seven years. The stainless ones hold up considerably longer.

Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing
- Cold air dropping into the fireplace during summer months. A failed top-sealing damper leaves a straight vertical path from your chimney cap down to the firebox. You’ll feel it most in two-story Alpharetta homes where the fireplace sits under the main living space.
- The damper handle turns without stopping. On a healthy damper, you feel a firm stop at both open and closed. If it spins indefinitely or catches randomly, the cable has detached from the plate. Sometimes it’s just a slipped set screw. Sometimes the cable snapped inside the conduit.
- A whistling sound when the wind picks up. This is air being pulled across a partially-seated damper plate. You’ll hear it mostly on windy March days and during fast-moving storms that roll through north Fulton.
- You can see light coming down the flue when the damper is closed. Wait for a bright day, close the damper fully, and look up with a flashlight off. If daylight is visible around the edges of the plate, the gasket or the plate itself is warped. That’s a replacement, not an adjustment.
- Smoke backing into the room on startup. A damper that’s partially stuck closed restricts the draft. The firebox gets smoky in the first few minutes until the flue warms enough to pull. In Windward-area homes with tall chimneys, this is amplified.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Alpharetta, expect to pay $240 – $320 for a damper plate swap, $280 – $420 when the cable assembly also needs replacing, and $380 – $520 for a full frame replacement with a new mounting collar. The price includes the part, the labor, the trip, and a camera inspection of the flue before and after so you can see exactly what was changed. That camera confirmation matters. You shouldn’t have to take anyone’s word for what happened 20 feet up a dark chimney.
We give you a written price before any work starts, every time. No hourly billing, no surprise add-ons at the door. The written price includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the damper doesn’t operate smoothly after the repair, we come back and make it right. Danny Cortes has stood behind that promise on every HeatShield damper we’ve touched in Alpharetta.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the diagnosis. Open and close the damper, note what you feel, look for the model tag, and snap a picture of the flue from below. That helps us quote accurately over the phone. What you should not do is climb onto a two-story Alpharetta roof to inspect the cable mechanism at the top, or attempt to re-thread a damper cable through a flue while standing on a ladder over the firebox. Damper cables run under tension, and a snapped cable under load whips hard enough to open skin. There’s also the roof itself, plus the liner, plus the simple fact that a partially-seated damper leaves carbon monoxide a path into the house. If you’re standing in the living room noticing the handle spins free, call us at (762) 225-2593. We’ll bring the right part the first time.
FAQs
The original galvanized cable assembly usually lasts 6 – 9 years in Georgia’s humidity before corrosion or fatigue causes failure. The damper plate itself can last 15 – 20 years if the firebox isn’t regularly over-fired. Upgrading to stainless cable at the first replacement is the single best longevity move.

About 70% of the HeatShield dampers we see in Alpharetta are repairable without a full frame replacement. A slipped set screw, a frayed cable, a worn pulley, or a warped gasket can all be fixed while keeping the original frame. Full replacement is only necessary when the frame is rusted through or the plate’s hinge points have broken.
Call (762) 225-2593 with a few pictures and we’ll give you an honest read on repair vs. replacement.
Most damper plate swaps and cable replacements take 60 – 90 minutes from the time our technician lays down drop cloths to the final photo of the cleaned-up firebox. A full frame replacement can run two hours. We book one job at a time so the work gets done carefully, not rushed.

Yes. We carry the common HeatShield plate sizes, stainless cable assemblies, pulleys, and mounting hardware on our Alpharetta service trucks. If your flue is a less common size or the model tag indicates an older series, we order it and schedule your install as soon as it arrives. At least half of our damper calls are resolved the same visit.

We also stock chimney parts from DuraFlex and Gelco, so if your HeatShield damper shares a flue with another brand’s liner, we can handle both in one trip.
